Amaurosis fugax

Definition

 

  • Amaurosis fugax = transient (short-lived and temporary), painless, monocular loss of vision

    • patients often describe 'a curtain coming down' over the vision in the affected eye ​

    • patients may often be unsure whether one eye is affected, or whether a homonymous hemianopia was experienced

Causes

  • Embolic

    • typically amaurosis fugax lasts a few minutes​​​

  • Haemodynamic

  • Ocular

  • Neurologic

  • Idiopathic

Presentation

​

  • curtain coming down in the vision​

  • typically lasts a few minutes

  • may occur a few times a day to a few times a year

  • if related to an ipsilateral cerebral transient ischaemic attack (TIA), may have associated contralateral neurological deficit
