Genitourinary

​

  • Syphilis​

    • Uveitis

  • Chlamydia (NSU)

    • Conjunctivitis

    • In children, cause of ophthalmia neonatorum (conjunctivitis of newborn)

    • Consider chlamydial conjunctivitis if not improving with treatment/ usual time course

    • Associated with pre-auricular lymphadenopathy

    • Can be treated with single dose azithromycin 1g

    • Refer to genitourinary medicine

  • Gonorrhoea

    • Conjunctivitis, worrying in neonatal period

    • Can penetrate through intact cornea; can lead to intraocular problems

  • HIV

    • Opportunistic infection as CD4 counts drop – esp. CMV

    • Intraocular inflammation

    • Oral hairy leuokoplakia

    • Conditions such as Kaposi’s sarcoma

    • CMV retinitis in eye: haemorrhage and infiltrate, characteristic

      • CMV is opportunistic infection as CD4 count drops
